Belt Drive Conversion

Beitrag von kaptainkwak »

Hello there twinners

I am about to start my soft tail bobber project and would really love to make it belt drive.

Does anyone know exactly what parts i would need to convert a CSR engine to the K belt drive?

I think i would need rear wheel, rear pully, pulley carrier, front pulley, engine cover and the internal output shaft cover. I think the CSR swing arm can be easily modified.

Thank you in advance

KK

Hi kk,

you need at first the frame of a belt drive for conversion.
Because the belt needs much more space, it doesnt work in a csr frame.

The wheels are equal. I drive both, spoke whells from the Y and the original cast wheels.
The swing arm of the belt is a very little different wider then the belt drive swing arm.
At home i have a photo you can see it.

Hi KK,

nice idea, it will not work :-O

Werner is right, the BD frame is wider to give space to the belt's width.
Belt will strive (?) /touch the CSR/LTD frame!

It is even more worse !!!

The belt front sprocket is large, needs a lot of space, caused by the bending radius of that belt.
BD motors have their clutch actuation on the right hand side (clutch case).
CSR, LTD Y1 and all the Bs have their clutch actuation in the left hand sprocket cover.
... and there is the clutch push rod (Kupplungsdruckstange)!!!

There is no chance to have the clutch push rod and a belt drive front sprocket in the same space !!!

Sorry bout that ;-(

Cheers, Michael

Denkt dran:
Die Drehrichtung des Motors an der Zündungsseite ist gegen(!) den Uhrzeigersinn.
Die Steuerkette nur bei montiertem Ventildeckel spannen, sonst droht ein kapitaler Motorschaden!
Allzeit Gute Fahrt!

Thank you for the fast replies guys.

It is indeed sad news. The frame i will be using is from a B1. Would that be better? I realise that even if it is i will need a full K engine which sadly are rare over here in the UK but you never know.

Thanks again

DO NOT PANIC..... :ka:

it is correct - the original BeltDrive has a frame which has more space for Belt instead of chain. And it is also correct that you will need a engine which has the mechanism for the clutch in the right sidecover.
But with this sidecover and clutch you can modify an older kawa-twin engine...

and When you have a look on modern bikes which use a belt - may be a buell.. these modern Belt is very small - not so big as the "OLD Kawasaki" Type (42mm) ... when i´m right is the Beld-Type the same..... used in 28,5mm or 38mm and these bikes have more power...

I mean - no i´m sure - when you use the Belt-Wheels from the old twin - you can also use a smaller belt. And this should be possible in the Chain-Frame.
What you need are the Kawa Belt-wheels.. an engineer to make them smaler - and a smaler Belt in the correkt lengt.. as the industrial spare parts available....

best wishes
Manne

sorry - i hope you will understand my english. :ka:. otherwise - ask....

I wanted to do such a projekt... but there are some other bikes in the garage.Thats why i stopped this... and nearly all parts are sold. But these two original Kawasaki belt wheels are in the workshop..

Thank You for your comments manne. Your comments are how i am thinking and you have confirmed i am not insane. Do not worry about your English it is very good and i fully understand what you are saying. It is far better them my German speaking which does not exist. We are the ignorant ones.

Just to update you a little i am currently casing down a not complete 750 K here in the UK. Hopefully it will have all the parts i need and not be silly money.

Thanks again
