Chain and Sprocket

Hello again
Many questions from a new Twin owner but you guys are great to help and I really appreciate your assistance.

I discovered that the back sprocket are worn and I also see that when I try to adjust the slack of the chain it is not even when turning the backwheel. I guess the chain has been partly stretched before I purchased the 750 Ltd twin and are now looking for a complete new chain and sprocket kit. The front sprocket has 16 teeth and the backsprocket has 38 and I think it is an o-ring chain that is mounted now.
When it comes to selecting the chain I am not sure if I should go for a o-ring type, X-ring or non o-ring chain.

Any here that has any idea of what kind of chain to select or even better, a link to a webshop that can provide what I am looking for..?

Hi Salaren,

I am just back from my holidays in Norway and at the final stage the chain at Marias LTD broke after just 10.000 km!
Go for a chain with good quality as DID offers them, O-Ring is sufficient.
You may like to have slightly longer transmission ratio with 17:38. I love that.
17 teeth front sprocket of a Yamaha SR500 (famous single) will fit plug 'n' play.
Stock chain length with 106 links/increments will cope with that as well.

Thanks Michael ans sorry for late reply

Good to hear you guys had a good trip to Norway and hope the breakdown did not ruin to much of the trip

Yes, I have still not replaced the sprocket and chain and at this time I am happy for that too as I have been driving the bike a bit and also like you say discover that the ratio with 16/38 sprockets make the bike a bit high on the RPM during normal driving. As well as there is plenty torque on the lower RPM to keep the bike running in the 5th shift. So I was also thinking about changing the original setup from 16/38 to 17/38 but was not sure about if there is space enought for a 17. But now when I read your reply I understand this is fully possible. So I will look into it again and order a new set sprockets and chain in the fall and have this as a little winterproject.
Thanks a lot for your assistance

By the way, when you look at the link, can you by looking at the picture see that this is the correct sprocket..? If it is I will ask for a 17 instead. http://mc-deler.com/search.asp?S=MCD-047982

Hi Salaren,

after Maria's experience I would go for a good quality drive chain only, not for the cheapest one ;-)

The shown front sprocket looks familiar and the VN800 is in the list as well.
Attached the spec of "our" front sprocket and the model list of bikes that uses the same inner indenting.

Today, after spending the morning changing sprockets and chain I had a drive with the new setup. As already recommended I ordered a 17 teeth instead of the original 16 and I discover the RPM at 80 Kmh is about 225-250RPM lower than before. To be honest I should wish it would be possible to have an even larger front sprocket but there is no physical space due to the chain guard. The only option I think could be possible is to change the weel sprocket from 38 to 36 teeth. Have anyone here tried that combo with 17/36..?

However, it gave a better drive with the new setup and I am glad I did it.

Thanks for all your help folks

Hi Salaren,

my uncle Hubertus is using that transmission ratio since many years.
He is very happy with that and had it fitted during our travel through Norway also.

The only thing is, there is no matching stock rear sprocket with 36 teeth available.
So it needs to be an individually made aluminium sprocket.

Over here it will cost approx 80,- to 100,- Euros.

On the pic you can see two of them, one has 38 and the other has 36 teeth.
Even with 17/36 you can use the chain with 106 incriments.
